Farm & Crop Insurance

Farming is the foundation. Your insurance program needs to be built like one.

Farm and crop insurance is among the most specialized commercial lines in the market. Multi-peril crop, named-peril hail, livestock mortality, farm liability, equipment, structures, and the federal crop insurance framework all interact in ways that require an advisor who actually understands agriculture — not someone who pulls a generic farm package.

Most farm programs aren’t underpriced. They’re under-built. Inadequate dwelling and outbuilding valuations, missing equipment limits as the operation scales, gaps between farm liability and commercial trucking exposure, sublimited livestock coverage, and federal crop programs that aren’t optimized for the operation’s actual risk profile — these gaps are common, and they only matter when the year doesn’t go the way it was supposed to.

At Avanti Group, we run a Business Risk Diagnostic™ before we build any farm submission. We map your operation, your acreage, your livestock, your equipment, your custom work, and your federal crop election — and structure coverage that reflects the actual operation, not a template.

Who We Work With

We place farm programs for agricultural operators across Iowa and the Midwest, including:

  • Row crop operators (corn, soybeans, small grains)
  • Specialty crop and produce operations
  • Livestock operations (cow-calf, feeder cattle, swine, dairy, poultry)
  • Custom farming and custom harvest operators
  • Trucking operations attached to a farming business
  • Agritourism and farm-based events
  • Vineyards, orchards, and tree fruit operations
  • Multi-generation family farms and partnerships

The Coverage Lines That Matter Most

A complete farm program is layered across federal, state, and standard markets. The components we evaluate and place include:

  • Federal Multi-Peril Crop Insurance (MPCI) — revenue and yield protection at various coverage levels with annual election decisions that materially affect outcome
  • Crop-Hail — named-peril coverage for hail, often layered with MPCI to fill gaps in physical damage coverage
  • Livestock Mortality & Risk Protection — coverage for high-value livestock and federal LRP/LGM programs for cattle and swine
  • Farm Liability — premises and operations liability across the farm, with specific endorsements for custom work and agritourism
  • Farm Property — dwelling, outbuildings, machinery, equipment, and stored crop
  • Farm Auto & Trucking — for grain trucks, semis, and equipment in transit
  • Pollution — for chemical applicators, fertilizer storage, and fuel tanks
  • Workers’ Compensation — where required, with farm-specific class codes
  • Umbrella & Excess — additional limits across farm liability, auto, and personal lines

The Risks Most Farm Programs Miss

Federal crop election is rarely optimized. The choice between yield protection, revenue protection, and various coverage levels has significant impact on the policy outcome — and the right election varies by crop, region, and operation profile. Most operators take last year’s election by default. We help analyze the alternatives.

Equipment limits don’t keep pace with the operation. Farm equipment values have climbed dramatically, and a fleet that grew from $250K to $1.5M needs the inland marine schedule updated, not just renewed at the same limit. We audit equipment schedules regularly.

Custom work creates exposure most farm policies don’t address. If you do custom planting, harvesting, or trucking for neighbors, you’ve added a commercial exposure that may not be properly covered under the farm policy. We schedule custom work specifically.

Pollution and chemical exposure is frequently uncovered. Spray drift, chemical spills, and fuel storage create pollution liability that the standard farm policy excludes. Specific endorsements or stand-alone pollution coverage is needed for operators with significant chemical use.
