An RV is a vehicle, a dwelling, and a travel companion. Generic auto coverage misses most of it.
Recreational vehicle insurance is a specialty in its own right. Class A, B, and C motorhomes, fifth wheels, travel trailers, and pop-up campers all have different exposure profiles, and the right policy needs to address vehicle liability, physical damage on a high-value asset, contents, full-time occupancy considerations, and the unique risks of campground use.
Most RV programs aren’t underpriced. They’re under-built. Coverage placed on a standard auto endorsement that doesn’t address contents or full-time use, missing total loss replacement on newer units, no vacation liability for setup at campgrounds, and inadequate scheduled coverage for solar systems, awnings, and toys hauled along — these are the gaps that don’t surface until something happens on the road or at the site.
At Avanti Group, we run a Residential Risk Audit™ before we recommend any RV program. We map the unit, your usage, your travel patterns, and your specific exposures — and structure coverage that fits how you actually use the RV.
Vehicles We Cover
We place RV coverage for owners across Iowa and the Midwest, including:
- Class A, B, and C motorhomes
- Fifth wheels and travel trailers
- Pop-up campers and teardrop trailers
- Toy haulers and adventure trailers
- Full-time RVers using their unit as a primary residence
- Owners with multiple RVs or trailers
The Coverage Lines That Matter Most
A complete RV program includes:
- Liability — bodily injury and property damage while operating
- Collision & Comprehensive — physical damage on the unit
- Total Loss Replacement — on newer units, replacing with a comparable unit rather than depreciated value
- Personal Effects — coverage for contents inside the unit
- Vacation Liability — coverage when the RV is set up at a campground (premises liability)
- Full-Timer’s Coverage — for owners using the RV as a primary residence
- Emergency Expense / Towing — for breakdowns and recovery
- Scheduled Coverage for Solar, Awnings, Satellite Systems — aftermarket additions
What Most RV Programs Get Wrong
Standard auto endorsement is the wrong form for many units. Specialized RV policies offer total loss replacement, contents coverage, and vacation liability that auto endorsements don’t.
Total loss replacement is missing. Without it, a total loss on a 3-year-old RV pays depreciated value — far below what it costs to replace. Total loss replacement preserves the value.
Full-timer status isn’t disclosed. Owners using the RV as a primary residence need full-timer’s coverage, which adds liability and contents protection comparable to a homeowners policy.
