ATVs, UTVs, and powersports vehicles aren’t toys. The right policy treats them like the assets they are.
Powersports insurance covers ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides, snowmobiles, and similar off-road vehicles. The exposure includes physical damage to the vehicle, liability while operating it (especially on public land or with passengers), and the unique risks of trail use, hunting, and off-property operation.
Most powersports programs aren’t underpriced. They’re under-built. Inadequate liability for passenger injury, missing coverage when operated off your property, no scheduled coverage for upgrades and accessories, and confused coordination between the powersports policy and any homeowners or umbrella policy — these are the gaps that show up after an accident in the field.
At Avanti Group, we run a Residential Risk Audit™ before we recommend any powersports program. We look at your vehicles, your usage, your storage, and your specific exposures — and structure coverage that fits how you actually ride.
What Powersports Insurance Covers
A complete powersports program includes:
- Liability — bodily injury and property damage while operating, including passenger injury
- Collision & Comprehensive — physical damage coverage for the vehicle
- Custom Parts & Accessories — aftermarket modifications above standard sublimits
- Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist — protection on roadways or in trail-use scenarios
- Medical Payments — medical expenses for the rider and passengers
- Off-Premises Coverage — for use off your own property (trails, public land, BLM)
- Personal Umbrella Coordination — for additional liability above the powersports primary
What Most Powersports Programs Get Wrong
Liability limits are too low. Powersports vehicles often carry passengers, and a passenger injury claim can exceed low liability limits quickly. We benchmark against assets and umbrella requirements.
Off-premises coverage is misunderstood. Operating an ATV on your own property is one exposure. Operating on a trail, public land, or a friend’s property is a different exposure that may not be covered without specific scheduling.
Custom modifications are uncovered above sublimits. Lift kits, winches, lights, sound systems, and other modifications can add significant value to a UTV or side-by-side. Most policies cap coverage for accessories at a low default limit.
