Churches face liability that ordinary commercial policies aren’t built for. The right program reflects that mission.
Churches and faith-based organizations carry a unique combination of property exposure, liability, employment risk, and care-of-people responsibility. Sanctuaries, fellowship halls, schools, daycare programs, youth ministries, mission trips, vehicle fleets, and volunteer-run operations all create exposures that a generic commercial policy doesn’t address well.
Most church programs aren’t underpriced. They’re under-built. Inadequate sexual abuse and molestation coverage, missing pastoral counseling liability, sublimited youth and children’s ministry exposures, untrained-driver volunteer exposure, and poorly structured D&O for board and elder leadership — these are the gaps that don’t surface until something serious has already happened.
At Avanti Group, we run a Business Risk Diagnostic™ before we build any church submission. We map your facilities, your ministries, your staff and volunteer structure, and your specific exposures — and make sure the program is built around how your church actually operates.

The Coverage Lines That Matter Most
A complete church program is built from several interconnected lines. The components we evaluate and place include:
- Property Insurance — sanctuary, fellowship hall, education buildings, parsonages, and contents at proper replacement cost
- General Liability — premises and operations, including events, fellowship activities, and ministry programming
- Sexual Abuse & Molestation Coverage — one of the most critical lines for any organization working with children or vulnerable populations
- Pastoral Counseling Liability — protection for clergy and staff providing counseling services
- Workers’ Compensation — for paid staff, with appropriate handling for ministerial vs. non-ministerial classifications
- Commercial Auto & Hired/Non-Owned — church vans, buses, and volunteer-operated vehicles
- Directors & Officers — for elder boards, deacons, and governance structures
- Employment Practices Liability — for employment-related claims by paid staff
- Cyber Liability — for member data, donation processing, and online services
- Foreign Travel & Mission Trip Coverage — for short-term missions, retreats, and international ministry
The Risks Most Church Programs Miss
Sexual abuse and molestation coverage is frequently sublimited or excluded. For any church with youth ministry, children’s programming, or vulnerable adult ministry, this is the most critical line on the program. Many older policies carry inadequate limits or restrictive exclusions that don’t surface until a claim is filed.
Volunteer driver exposure is routinely uncovered. Members and volunteers driving children, seniors, or other groups in personal vehicles create hired and non-owned auto exposure that most generic church policies underestimate. We make sure HNOA limits and structure reflect actual ministry practice.
Counseling liability is frequently missing. Pastors, lay counselors, and staff providing counseling services face professional liability exposure that general liability won’t cover. The risk is real and rarely scheduled correctly.
D&O for elder boards is often inadequate. Volunteer board members and elders face personal liability for governance decisions, employment matters, and stewardship of church resources. A standard package policy rarely carries adequate D&O for the actual exposure.
How to Get Started
Church insurance isn’t a commodity product. The right program depends on your facilities, your ministries, your staff and volunteer structure, and the specific exposures of your congregation. We need to understand your church before we can build the right program for it.
